Much in the same manner as I started a feature looking at Foam Magazine’s Talent Issue from 2011, one thing appears signifficantly consistent; inspiration still doesnt come much bigger than this.
A few weeks back Wandering Bears were lucky enough to pick up a pre release copy of this year’s Talent Issue from Foam Magazine at the Unseen Photography Fair Amsterdam, and once again, the elegantly and thoughtfully curated 288 pages are bursting with moving / engaging / exciting and thought provoking work, some incorporating processes of paint, sculpture and montage; but then again, this is exactly what Foam Magazine does best. Producing an accurately articulated overlook of the current varying trends and movements relating to the field of photography and how the featured artists’ talent promises to develop the photographic medium in the following years to come.
As with every installment of Foam’s annual Talent issue, i find myself drawn to several specific names over and again. The work of Sam Falls, Marleen Sleeuwits & Olga Cafiero captivate my attention time and again. These three featured artists seem to poses an outspoken visual approach to photography, with construction and deconstruction playing significant roles in each their processes. Sam Falls’ paint & photographic montage’s offer a rainbow of textures and subjects that leave me questioning where one medium begins and the other ends. Sleeuwits’ constructions inspire me to build, build and build some more. Her self made room sized installations / constructions each present a new dimension, each conjuring a host of varying emotions, both vividly unsettling and captivating. Cafiero’s Curioso series; a photographic personification of mystery and oddity, offers just that, inspired by the Cabinet of Curiosity, Cafiero’s work provokes curiosity and wonder and for me there is nothing more desirable within a photograph.
Having highlighted only three of the bright talents selected for this year’s issue in this post, there are still another 12 for you to discover. At 20 Euros, this promises a small price for so much inspiration.
